Intraocular Lens Milwaukee

Woman getting a piggy back rideWhen cataract surgery and intraocular lenses were first introduced, patients who suffered from astigmatism as well as cataracts were unable to find adequate treatment. Fortunately, advances in ophthalmology have made way for the creation of sophisticated intraocular lenses (IOLs) that are able to respond to a variety of vision problems in conjunction with cataracts. Experienced eye surgeon Steven Koenig utilizes the AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL to give his astigmatic Milwaukee patients the chance to experience clear vision. If your vision has suffered due to cataracts, astigmatism, or other vision problems, contact Dr. Koenig today to schedule an evaluation.

What is Astigmatism?

A blurry shopping listAstigmatism is a fairly common refractive error that prevents light from properly focusing on the retina, causing blurred vision. Typically, astigmatism occurs when there are irregularities in the shape of the eye’s natural structures. In corneal astigmatism, the cornea usually has an oblong shape, as opposed to a spherical shape. Lenticular astigmatism, which is less common, occurs when the actual lens of the eye is particularly curved. Astigmatism results in light being spread out among several focal points, as opposed to one, causing objects both up close and at a distance to look distorted.  Astigmatism can occur in varying degrees.

During a consultation, Dr. Koenig will closely evaluate your condition to help you decide if the AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL is right for you.

How the AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL Can Help

AcrySof® IQ Toric IOLIn the past, eye surgeons attempted to correct astigmatism by making an additional incision during cataract surgery to reshape the cornea. The advanced technology of the AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL, however, eliminates the need for a more invasive procedure. It also successfully improves a patient’s distance vision, reducing or even eliminating his or her dependence on eyeglasses. While a conventional intraocular lens will result in some vision improvement for astigmatic patients, the AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL produces superior results by responding to both vision conditions.

A blurry shopping list The AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL is a monofocal lens, specifically designed to enhance a patient’s distance vision. Although patients may experience some improvement in close-up vision, glasses may still be necessary for activities such as reading. This IOL uses what is known as an aspheric lens, to respond to astigmatism. An aspheric lens is flatter than a traditional IOL to adequately respond to the irregular curvature of the cornea. By offering the Toric IOL to his Milwaukee patients, Dr. Koenig gives all individuals a chance to achieve clear vision - even those who were previously not considered candidates for the procedure.
