Improving, Restoring and Preserving Sight

Dr. Suson and Dr. De Stefano are part of a team of physicians and vision researchers dedicated to treating patients, training the next generation of ophthalmologists and conducting basic science and clinical research aimed at improving outcomes for patients and their families. In addition to laser refractive surgery, they have extensive expertise in advanced cataract surgical techniques and premium intraocular lens implants including astigmatism and presbyopia correcting lenses. Modern cataract surgery techniques allow for efficient, pain-free surgery and rapid recovery with most patients able to return to their daily routine within a day or two.

The availability of newer cataract surgery lens implant technologies allows patients to maximize their visual outcome for distance as well as near vision. For those cataract surgery patients interested in restoring both distance and reading vision simultaneously, Dr. Suson and Dr. De Stefano offer premium presbyopia correcting intraocular lens implants, like the ALCON PanOptix® Trifocal and the TECNIS Symfony® Extended Depth-of-Focus lenses. These choices offer our cataract surgery patients more options and flexibility to fit their own personal lifestyle so that they can successfully enjoy their daily activities.

The Eye Institute is a regional source of state-of-the-art medical knowledge about eye disease and treatment, with doctors recognized nationally and internationally for advances in eye care. Our ophthalmologists and optometrists provide a complete range of services, from the diagnosis and management of complex medical and surgical eye disease to routine eye care and cosmetic treatments.

Refractive Surgery Backed by Academic Medicine

The highest quality patient care, cutting-edge research and education leadership come together at the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Eye Institute, making us the leading vision care center in southeastern Wisconsin. Our team of experts, John D. Suson, MD, and Vinicius De Stefano, MD, PhD, are our comprehensive ophthalmologists who perform refractive surgery. Combining their years of experience and expertise in the field and use of the latest technology in laser vision correction, our physicians are among the most trusted LASIK and refractive surgeons in southeastern Wisconsin.

Learn more about the procedures we provide:

  • Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK): Precision meets innovation in LASIK, where a delicate flap is meticulously crafted using advanced laser technology on the cornea’s top layer. Subsequently, another laser expertly sculpts the underlying tissue, paving the way for enhanced vision.
  • Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK): Tailored for those with a thin cornea, PRK involves a gentle removal of the top surface of the cornea. The excimer laser then reshapes the underlying tissue, offering a sophisticated solution for vision enhancement, without the need for a flap.
  • Contoura® Vision: experience the pinnacle of personalized laser vision correction with Contoura®. This topography-guided treatment, applicable to both LASIK and PRK procedures, optimizes the corneal surface to elevate your visual acuity to its maximum potential.
  • Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL): The EVO ICL is a posterior chamber implant that is inserted through a small incision in the eye behind the iris, and in front of the natural crystalline lens to correct your nearsightedness. The EVO ICL is designed for the correction of moderate-to-high nearsightedness and astigmatism. ICL represents an alternative to other refractive surgeries such as LASIK and PRK. The EVO ICL is intended to remain in place without maintenance. However, the EVO ICL can be removed if needed.
  • Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE): Distinguished from laser vision correction, RLE leaves the cornea untouched. Instead, it involves the removal of the crystalline lens, replaced by a custom-made lens tailored to your specific prescription. RLE presents a sophisticated solution for vision refinement while preserving the integrity of the cornea.

LASIK Evaluation

At the Medical College of Wisconsin, we believe in a personal, caring and professional approach to eye care. That’s why we encourage patients to talk directly with our surgeons before making a decision about LASIK eye surgery. The appointment will last approximately two hours.

During your consultation, here is what will occur:

  • Complete eye exam
  • Computerized mapping of the cornea
  • Undilated and dilated measurements of your prescription
  • Evaluation of the medical health of your eyes
  • Personalized determination of your qualification as a good blade-free LASIK candidate
  • Education on the advantages of the Alcon’s Wavefront LASIK techniques compared to other technologies

To schedule your consultation, please call 414-955-7812 or fill out our Contact Us form, and our dedicated, knowledgeable staff will contact you.

And remember, at other “chain” LASIK centers, you may not have the opportunity to meet and discuss your LASIK surgery with a surgeon prior to the actual procedure. Your exam and education may be delegated to non-surgeons, technicians, and sales staff. Your only opportunity to talk directly to your surgeon at these centers may only come when a problem occurs.
