Premium IOLs for Improved Vision After Cataract Surgery

Illustration of premium IOLsIntraocular lenses (IOLs) have allowed many cataract patients see the world with renewed clarity. Unfortunately, standard IOLs do not completely address a patient’s needs to achieve clear vision. On the other hand, premium IOLs can reduce or altogether eliminate the need for corrective eyewear, even for patients with multifocal vision needs or who have astigmatism. Dr. Steven Koenig is proud to offer premium IOLs at his Milwaukee, Wisconsin, practice that mimic your eye’s natural lens and can provide incredibly clear vision to virtually any patient. To find out if our premium lenses are right for you, contact our practice today to schedule your appointment.

Traditional vs. Premium IOLs

For years, standard IOLs were the only choice that cataract patients had for correcting their vision. Today, most insurance companies and Medicare cover the cost of standard IOLs. This implant type is designed to provide clear distance vision for patients without astigmatism. Standard IOL patients will still need to wear eyeglasses to see objects that are near, and if you have astigmatism, you may need corrective lenses for to see clearly at any distance.

Fortunately, cataracts patients now have a choice in their IOLs. Premium IOLs have been created to address multifocal vision needs and astigmatism. Although premium IOLs are not usually fully covered by insurance, this option can be a great convenience for patients to eliminate the need for corrective eyewear.

Premium IOL Types

Dr. Koenig offers two premium IOL types: AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® and AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL. The AcrySof® IQ ReSTORE® IOL is an accommodating lenses (multifocal lens) that allows the eye to focus on both near and far objects without the need for additional corrective eyewear. The AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL is a monofocal lens that improves a patient’s distance vision, but has less curvature to it than a traditional IOL. The flatness of the lens helps to address the irregular curve of the cornea that is associated with astigmatism.

Your Premium IOL Procedure

The premium IOL implantation is a convenient and virtually pain-free procedure that is usually performed on an outpatient basis. After you are made comfortable, your doctor will remove the eye's natural lens, which also effectively removes the cataracts. Next, the premium implant will be implanted via a very small incision on the surface of the eye that does not require sutures. The lens is typically folded to fit through the incision. Once inside, it unfolds and is set correctly within the eye. This entire procedure usually takes less than fifteen minutes.

After Your Procedure

Our premium IOL patients can expect their recovery to be straightforward and with only minimal discomfort. We recommend that our patients rest for a while immediately following surgery. You may also be given an eye drop prescription to help relieve irritation. The vast majority of patients can return to work and light activities within 24 hours of the procedure. It is advised that patients refrain from activities that increase blood pressure, or could potentially injure the eyes. Over the coming weeks, your eyes will self-heal. The positive effects of your procedure should be most apparent several weeks after the implantation surgery.
